Technology in the reaper realm always advanced much quicker than in the mortal world. How that was possible wasn't made quite clear, but every employee would have to agree that it made the job far more tolerable and almost manageable. Before they knew it, fancy new machines were showing up in their cubicles and offices. Large ones that could transfer writing from one sheet to countless others. An extremely convenient electronic typewriter that made the organization of files far more streamlined. And now, their newest administered device which allowed them to communicate between departments and even branches without having to travel. They called it a 'cellular phone.'

They certainly were for the three years you were gone.
However, it also took me that long to convince them.
They were set on fully demoting you, should you come along quietly. Terminating you if you refused.

A lot of negotiation.
I made my argument on how you are the best agent we have for field work.
They agreed, but made it clear that it is now entirely my responsibility to keep you from running off again and causing unscheduled deaths.
The majority of the negative marks on your reports were placed onto mine, instead, and I took a decent cut in pay, as well.

It is my fault you ran off, after all. Both as your boss and, now knowing for certain, my lack of reciprocation of your feelings.
I also knew there was no change of you coming back quietly. As much of a headache as you are, I did not want you terminated.

Were I in your position, I would have taken the termination upon myself.

I can't say that I understand it.

You realise by terminated I mean they would erase you from this afterlife. Not simply fired, per se.
A cut in pay is far preferable, in my opinion.
